Llama (Large Language Model Meta AI) is Meta's family of open-weight language models. First released in February 2023, Llama has become the most widely adopted open-weight model family. Llama 2 (July 2023) introduced commercial licensing, Llama 3 (April 2024) significantly closed the gap to proprietary models, and Llama 4 (April 2025) introduced mixture-of-experts architecture. Llama models are available for download and can be self-hosted.
