[Human Health and Wellbeing] Open Philanthropy recommended a grant of $165,770 over two years to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) to support research led by Julio Croda on evaluating ethical protections for research among persons incarcerated in Brazilian prisons in the context of potential tuberculosis (TB) phase III vaccine trials that are currently being explored. There is no TB vaccine that is effective in adults, and in Brazil, rates of tuberculosis are more than 30 times higher among incarcerated persons than among the general population. This is one of three grants we’re making to support work in this area. This falls within our focus area of scientific research, specifically within our interest in advancing human health and wellbeing.
