With the announcement in July 2024 by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Secretary General that the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) is merging with the agency’s AI policy work, a new chapter in global AI governance unfolds.

GPAI’s history and development show that it struggled with three crucial pieces for any AI governance body: an appropriate organizational structure, a stable budget, and a clear, well-communicated mission.

The Partnership’s merger with the OECD will address these problems, providing more agency to its members, a more dependable budget, and more interoperability with the evolving network of global AI governance bodies while adding to the diversity of member countries.
