Summary

Published by the Center for Democracy and Technology in partnership with the GovAI Coalition, this guide provides state and local elected officials with actionable recommendations for governing AI in public agencies. It covers five core areas including public transparency, stakeholder engagement, accuracy, reliability, and human oversight. The checklist aims to help governments build trustworthy AI systems that serve constituents while avoiding failed projects and public harm.

Key Points

  • Calls for evidence-based procurement, minimum performance standards, and independent audits of AI tools including post-deployment reviews.
  • Emphasizes human oversight requirements, staff training, and investment in AI talent as essential governance components.
  • Advises creating public advisory councils and feedback mechanisms to ensure community input in agency AI decision-making.
  • Targets state and local government leaders specifically, filling a gap in AI governance guidance below the federal level.
