OpenAI has experienced several high-profile splits over the years, with key figures departing to launch their own ventures. One of the earliest and most significant was Anthropic, formed in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees who positioned the startup as a safer, more research-focused AI lab.
In 2023, Anthropic introduced its first major product, Claude, a chatbot built on the company’s “constitutional AI” framework. The underlying large-language model was quickly recognised for its sophistication, particularly in coding and enterprise-level tasks.
Claude has since gained strong traction among developers and businesses, with Anthropic expanding its API to support a wide range of professional use cases. According to one report, around 80 percent of the company’s revenue comes from enterprise and developer workloads. - Advertisement - As a result, while Claude is far less widely used than ChatGPT on a consumer level, it has generated billions in revenue from business customers, who are more inclined to pay for advanced tools, processing power and tailored support.
