EleutherAI

**EleutherAI** ([/əˈluːθər/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English "Help:IPA/English")[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EleutherAI#cite_note-interference-podcast-2)) is a grass-roots non-profit [artificial intelligence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence "Artificial intelligence") (AI) research group. The group, considered an open-source version of [OpenAI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenAI "OpenAI"),[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EleutherAI#cite_note-openai-not-enough-3) was formed in a [Discord](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discord "Discord") server in 2020 to create an open-source version of [GPT-3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPT-3 "GPT-3").[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EleutherAI#cite_note-:6-4) In early 2023, it formally incorporated as the EleutherAI Institute, a non-profit research institute.[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EleutherAI#cite_note-:0-5) As of 2025, the nonprofit maintains widely-used training datasets, conducts research, and is involved in public policy, among other activities.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EleutherAI#cite_note-:6-4)
